5 Japanese calligraphy brushes made by the Taiyang Tang 太陽堂 and inscribed with the Chinese characters 劍橋大學李約瑟用筆, meaning 'Brush for the use of Joseph Needham of Cambridge University', 1970s-1980s
Each of the brushes has the red, circular logo 'Taiyodo 太陽堂', the business that made them, at the top, and another plain white sticker lower down with the Chinese characters 太陽堂製 ('Made by the Taiyang Tang'). Two of the brushes are lacquered red, one lacquered black, and two are plain bamboo. Each has the Chinese characters 劍橋大學李約瑟用筆 (Brush for the use of Joseph Needham of Cambridge University) inscribed on it, and are of varying length. Where or when he was given them is not certain.

Chinese documents, 1766-1935
This series consists of a wide range of business, legal and official Chinese documents dating mainly from the nineteenth century, particularly from the first half of the century. Many of the papers concern or are connected to Jardine, Matheson & Co. and its members. There are also a few items in English, French, Japanese, Parsi, Portuguese and Spanish (in the catalogue the documents are in Chinese unless otherwise stated).

Needham has stuck leaflets and photographs from places visited into an exercise book and added brief notes. There is an index at the front of the book. Amongst the many places visited are Heian Temple in Kyoto; Toshogu Mausoleum; Itagaki family home in Osaka.
