Each of the brushes has the red, circular logo 'Taiyodo 太陽堂', the business that made them, at the top, and another plain white sticker lower down with the Chinese characters 太陽堂製 ('Made by the Taiyang Tang'). Two of the brushes are lacquered red, one lacquered black, and two are plain bamboo. Each has the Chinese characters 劍橋大學李約瑟用筆 (Brush for the use of Joseph Needham of Cambridge University) inscribed on it, and are of varying length. Where or when he was given them is not certain.

Including hand-tinted photographs of theatrical performances on board ship.

Places visited include a Taoist temple in Upper Serangoon Road, Singapore [There is also an envelope of photographs of this temple]; the Tao Kuan in Hong Kong; 'Tateshina's new 'parish schurch' Shokoji'; Toji Temple, Kyoto, Japan; 'Togari-Ishi Museum and Reconstructed Neolithic Jomon-period Thatched Huts';

This series consists of a wide range of business, legal and official Chinese documents dating mainly from the nineteenth century, particularly from the first half of the century. Many of the papers concern or are connected to Jardine, Matheson & Co. and its members. There are also a few items in English, French, Japanese, Parsi, Portuguese and Spanish (in the catalogue the documents are in Chinese unless otherwise stated).

The cards are divided geographically, with the majority being from Beijing and Japan.

The related documents include letter of reply from Miyasita providing information on the location of one of the books listed by Needham in his memorandum (See SCC2/139/6/2), the 《武略神機》; page from a catalogue of the Japanese National Library of the Government showing the entry for the book.

The material was found in Joseph Needham's room at the Needham Research Institute, Cambridge, following his death in 1995.

This series contains a wide range of legal documents relating to Jardine, Matheson & Co. and related companies and individuals.

The related documents comprise a photograph of a work by a 16th century artist showing a Ch'i Ch'i; copy of Hawking's reply; letter from Keyes to Joseph Needham written on a photocopy of a description of such a device in a Japanese work.

Medley's letter advises Joseph Needham that she has sent glass plate negatives of paintings. She provides bibliographical information about them. The related documents comprise further bibliographical details; photographs of two of the plates mentioned.

The attached papers include a copy of Yang's article entitled 'An Outline of the Law of Historical Cycles', published in 'The Transactions of the International Conference of Orientalists', (Japan, 1958); typescript notes of related comments by Dr. Edwin O. Reischauer and Prof. John K. Fairbank, compiled by Yang; diagrams illustrating the cycles in Chinese history.

The lists give the contents of 'Minzokugaku (The Folklore Monthly)', (Tokyo, 1929-1933); 'The Japanese Journal of Folklore and Ethnology', (Tokyo, 1924-1929); 'Folklore & Folkliterature Series of Peking University and Chinese Association for Folklore' (Reprinted 1974-1980).

This series divides into four parts: L1-6 contain original papers of governments and other non-commercial organisations; L7-10 consist of maps, plans, photographs, artwork and newspapers, mainly relating to Jardine, Matheson & Co., but including some general material; L11-13 contain secondary material regarding the company and its archive; and L14-16 are miscellaneous papers and artefacts unconnected to the other series in the archive.

Needham has stuck leaflets and photographs from places visited into an exercise book and added brief notes. There is an index at the front of the book. Amongst the many places visited are Heian Temple in Kyoto; Toshogu Mausoleum; Itagaki family home in Osaka.
